Travel Health Insurance Information

Many people see travel health insurance as an added expense they shouldn’t have to incur. There are times, however, when this particular purchase is worth its weight in gold. The fact is the extra coverage almost never hurts, and in some cases, it can be a real lifesaver.

If all that’s standing between you and a vacation is not being able to afford travel health insurance and you already have full-time coverage, it might be worth going without it. There are some cases, however, where these temporary policies should absolutely be considered. Let’s look at instances where this type of coverage should be considered:

  • Special travel/danger circumstances: Some regular medical insurance companies will not cover their normal clients under set circumstances. For example, if a person is taking part in a dangerous sport or activity or going into an area where medical risks are high, the regular coverage might not extend to these circumstance. In these cases, travel health insurance can be a very smart purchase. Filling in the gaps where regular insurance won’t, the temporary policy could come in handy. These policies are sometimes offered before high adventure trips or even for youngsters going to an out-of-state sporting event. Accidents can and do happen and while the extra expense of these policies isn’t something most people want to pay for, they can be worth their weight in gold if they’re needed.
  • Group situations: While many regular medical insurance policies cover hospitals and doctors all over the world, there are locations where they just don’t work. Some cruise ships, for example, have their own medical facilities that might not be covered. A travel health insurance policy in this case can save a lot of worry and expense if something comes up. The small policy expense can be a big budget saver, too, if a small illness strikes in the middle of the ocean.
  • Uninsured: While most people don’t expect to get sick while vacationing, it can happen. For those who don’t have regular medical coverage, travel health insurance plans can take this level of worry off them and their vacations. The policies are generally fairly affordable for the duration and just make it easier to get medical attention away from home.
  • Gap coverage: Even if regular medical coverage will pay expenses for any illness or injuries that happen on a trip, the travel health insurance plan might still be worth the expense to fill in gaps in coverage if they arise. The small investment could be a big money saver in the long run if an emergency arises.

Before buying travel health insurance, it doesn’t hurt to check with your regular insurance company to see what they cover and what they don’t. If you’re fully covered where you’re going and with what you’re doing, there’s no need to buy. But, if there are circumstances that might not be covered, the added expense might be in order.

While not every vacation and every person will require travel health insurance policies, the truth is these can be good additional purchases for many. The circumstances where these will be needed will vary, but in general these policies are pretty affordable. A few extra dollars up front to save a lot later if an illness or injury happens can be well worth it.
