History of this Islamic Miracle

Allah forced Prophet Ibrahim to abandon his wife Hajra and their son Ismail in an uncultivated region known as Makkah. Where the well’s story begins. Hajra (AS) ceaselessly traveled back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water when their meager food and water supplies ran out. Gabriel (peace be upon him) performed an act of divine intervention by causing water to burst forth from Ismail’s feet. Hajra (AS) immediately drank from the miraculous water and fed her son.

May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail, said the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Without her trying to regulate it, the Zamzam would have turned into a river across the Earth’s surface.

Zamzam water flowed less frequently and eventually stopped before Abdul Muttalib, the Prophet Muhammad’s great-grandfather. Abdul Muttalib, however, had a vision telling him to find the well again and restart its flow. He discovered the well and dug it up, restoring the water’s ability to pump and provide for the pilgrims. Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, Abdul Muttalib’s son, received this duty and carried it on for the rest of their family.
