While maybe not that known to my US audience, Vodafone is one of the largest cell service providers globally, with 531 million customers. They officially launched in 1985 and 1999 had the largest buyout ever, purchasing Mannesmann, a German telecoms/steel company for 183 billion, which would be over 300 billion today. It took over two years of deal-making to make it happen, but it eventually worked.
